Ways to Pray: The Rosary, part 4 of 5

When we can’t give God our full, undivided attention

By William Van de Planque | On Mission

A world of distractions can separate us from deep, meditative prayer that nurtures our relationship with God. But that should not discourage us from praying in general. Prayer is above all else about showing up and giving God our time, no matter our disposition or attention span.

Even if we have more than two and a half minutes to spend in prayer, it’s okay if we can’t give God our full, undivided attention — although that should always be our aim.

Simply giving God the time

The Rosary is a great way to pray and give our time to God, even when we are distracted or have difficulty focusing on the words themselves.

Simply pray the prayers of the Rosary and allow them to be words of praise to the one true God. God seeks all of us, his sons and daughters and his beloved creatures, and wants to spend time with us. Mary, the Mother of God, makes it easy for us and gives us the grace to grow closer to her Son Jesus through the prayers of the Rosary, especially when we come to her in our broken humanity.

The Glorious Mysteries

The Glorious Mysteries of the Holy Rosary explore the events following the Crucifixion and Death of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Here we find the wellspring of our faith from which we draw enduring hope and praise for God’s majesty. Let us give praise to our God, the King of the Universe, whose glory shines forth the most in these heavenly mysteries.

  1. The First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection

Scripture: Luke 24:1-5

Reflection: Jesus rises from the dead, conquering sin and death. This mystery is central to our Christian faith and fills us with hope that no darkness is greater than God’s light. Where do I need to experience resurrection and renewal in my life? How can I live more fully in the joy of the Risen Christ?

  1. The Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension

Scripture: Mark 16:19

Reflection: Jesus returns to the Father, promising to be with us always. This mystery reminds us that our true home is in heaven. How can I keep my eyes fixed on eternal life while living faithfully here and now? What does it mean for me to be Christ’s witness in the world?

  1. The Third Glorious Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit

Scripture: Acts 2:1-4

Reflection: The Holy Spirit empowers the apostles to proclaim the Gospel boldly. This mystery invites us to open our hearts to the Spirit’s guidance and gifts. How is the Holy Spirit moving in my life today? What gifts has God given me to build up the Church?

  1. The Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of Mary

Scripture: Luke 1:48-49

Reflection: Mary is taken body and soul into heaven, a sign of the destiny that awaits all who follow Christ. Her life is a model of faithful discipleship. How can I imitate Mary’s trust and obedience to God? What does her Assumption teach me about the dignity of the human body and soul?

  1. The Fifth Glorious Mystery: The Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth

Scripture: Revelation 12:1

Reflection: Mary is crowned Queen, interceding for us with a mother’s love. This mystery reminds us of her powerful role in our spiritual journey. Do I turn to Mary in times of need and joy? How can I grow in devotion to her and trust in her intercession?
