Sunday Readings for August 1-2, 2026 – Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Sunday’s first reading opens with one of Scripture’s most striking phrases: “Thus says the LORD.” When these words are proclaimed at Mass, they command attention and carry unmistakable authority. It is a divine summons — God is speaking, and what follows truly matters.
The prophet Isaiah delivers an invitation of breathtaking generosity: “All you who are thirsty, come to the water! You who have no money, come, receive grain and eat; Come, without paying and without cost, drink wine and milk!” The Lord does not ration His gifts. He offers abundance freely — life, covenant, and the sure promise given to David: “Come to me heedfully, listen, that you may have life.”
Psalm 145 takes up the same refrain: “The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs.” The Lord is near to all who call upon Him. He opens His hand and satisfies the desire of every living thing.
Saint Paul then lifts our eyes higher still. Nothing — anguish, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or the sword — can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The One who feeds the body also secures the soul. His love is the unshakeable foundation that sustains us beyond every need.
In the Gospel, that same Lord acts. Moved with pity, Jesus multiplies five loaves and two fish. He looks up to heaven, blesses, breaks, and gives. The crowd of five thousand eats and is satisfied, with twelve baskets left over. In this miracle, we already glimpse the Eucharist: Christ Himself becoming the Bread that will feed His people until the end of time.
We live in a season of hunger and need — medical bills, family crises, and quiet anxieties that leave many wondering whether God still provides or remains present amid these trials. The readings answer with a single, consistent voice: He does. The same Lord who spoke through Isaiah, who fed the multitudes by the water, and who gives Himself in every Mass continues to open His hand to us.
This week, take some time praying with these texts in Lectio Divina. Let God’s persistent invitation — “Come… listen… eat” — settle into your own need. Let him speak through his Word into your need. And in this rest, you can find trust in, “Thus says the LORD,” the One who still speaks, still feeds, and still holds us in His love, now and unto eternity.
