Did you know that you can access The Compass newspaper articles through a few simple steps?
With the help of an archival tool accessible through the On Mission website, you are invited to “go back in time” to search, rediscover and read the countless stories, columns and editorials in the longtime official newspaper of the Diocese of Green Bay.
Established in 1978 and sunsetted in 2023, The Compass provided information, news, education and inspiration for Catholics living in the 16 counties of northeastern Wisconsin.
All the issues of the newspaper from 2013-2023 are currently available for reading and, according to diocesan Archives staff, older issues of The Compass will continue to be added.
Whether you are looking for a specific story featured in an issue of The Compass or are simply curious and want to read about the past, you are welcome to explore the Archives.
The diocese’s On Mission magazine, e-newsletter and website took The Compass’ place in the past year after the newspaper was sunsetted in December 2023 and are designed to inspire and inform our diocesan community.
On Mission articles will also be added to the Archives and will be searchable to the public through the steps outlined below.
How to Access the Archives
Step 1: Finding the Link
- Go to the On Mission website: OnMissionMedia.com
- In the blue menu bar select About > Archives
- You will be directed to a new page. Click the blue link labeled “The Compass Catholic News Archive” which will take you to the Atla database for searching.
Step 2: Searching for Content
- From the black menu bar at the top of the Atla page, select Search
- Click the Advanced Search button (the three horizontal lines displayed next to the search box)
- Scroll through the bottom box labeled Limit Search By Title and select
“The Compass” - Click Search
- Note: You also have the option to search by date, time, and title to help narrow your search even further.
- Type what you are searching for into the search box at the top of the page
- Enjoy scrolling back in time and reading all the stories which have been covered over the years.

How to Access older stories
If you seek a specific story, column or editorial which predates the online Archives, send a request with the issue date, if possible, and subject of the piece to [email protected].
If you need to search multiple issues of the Compass for more in-depth research, contact the diocesan archives at [email protected].
