Sr. Marietta Samz, longtime teacher in the Diocese of Green Bay and avid gardener, dies at age 87

BAY SETTLEMENT — Sr. Marietta Samz, 87, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross, died June 12 at age 87.

Sr. Marietta, the former Rosalie Martha Samz, was born to the late Oscar and Frances (Reuter) Samz on Jan. 2, 1937, in Manitowoc. She entered the convent in 1956 and professed vows in 1959.

A graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Sr. Marietta served as an elementary school teacher in the Diocese of Green Bay at St. Joseph, Marinette; St. Jude, Green Bay; Holy Cross, Bay Settlement; Holy Angels, Darboy; St. Kilian, New Franken; St. John the Baptist, Howard; St. Charles, Lena; All Saints, Denmark; and Holy Cross, Kaukauna. 

She also taught in the Sacred Heart Southern Missions in Tunica, Miss. She was also  an English as a second language (ESL) teacher at Fort Howard Family Resource Center in Green Bay.

Sr. Marietta was known for her Franciscan spirit in her love for God and all creation. 

She arranged flowers for the motherhouse chapel and other areas. She cared for an herbal garden and shared herbs with the kitchen. She also kept watch for bluebirds in the spring and tagged monarch butterflies in the fall.

She is survived by the Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Cross and Associates; a sister, Helen Koch, Mishicot; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding Sr. Marietta in death were her parents; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bernard (Shirley), Edward (Phyllis), Joseph (Audrey), Michael (Dorothy), Roland (Marie) and William (Annette); sisters and brothers-in-law: Marie (Gary) La Fond, Frances (John) Kornely, Katherine (Francis) Tomcheck, Eleanore (John) Kattner; and brother-in-law Robert Koch.

The funeral Mass was celebrated on June 18 by Norbertine Fr. David McElroy at Holy Cross Church, Bay Settlement.
