Sr. Alice Thome, who ministered as a teacher and principal, dies

MANITOWOC — Sr. Alice Thome, a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity who served many years in education, died Sept. 29 at Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc.  She was 97.

Sr. Alice, who was from Spring Valley, Wis., entered the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity in 1943. She professed final vows in 1951.

A graduate of Holy Family College in Manitowoc, Sr. Alice ministered as a teacher at the following schools: St. Nicholas, Zanesville, Ohio, and Holy Spirit, Menominee, Mich., and in Wisconsin at St. Joseph and St. Mary, both in Waukesha; St. Peter, Ashton; and St. John the Baptist, Plymouth.

In the Diocese of Green Bay, she taught at St. Boniface, Manitowoc; Sacred Heart, Sherwood; St. Joseph, Green Bay; and St. Gabriel, Neenah. Sr. Alice served as a principal at St. Pius X, Appleton.

Following her years as an educator, Sr. Alice cared for her parents, Frederick and Mary (Prock) Thome. 

She then ministered at Silver Lake College, while living at St. Francis Convent, Manitowoc. Sr. Alice also served at San Damiano in Slinger, Wis., St. Francis Convent and St. Catherine in Topawa, Ariz.

Sr. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; brothers (sisters-in-law): Michael (Georgia) Thome and Frederick (Christine) Thome; sisters (brothers-in-law): Marie (Leonard) Hisdahl, Anotonette (Joel) Wise, Maebelle Thome and Marvin Cunnigham.

She is survived by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity; brother (sister-in-law): Joseph (Bev) Thome; sisters (brother-in-law): Margaret Thome, Dorothy (James) Zoch and Kathryn Cunnigham; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Oct. 3 at Holy Family Convent. Franciscan Fr. Gerald Prusakowski will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in Holy Family Convent Cemetery.
