VATICAN — On Tuesday, marking the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord, Pope Leo XIV presided over Holy Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica for some 5,800 faithful.

At the start of the Mass, the pope closed the Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica, the last of the Holy Doors opened for the Jubilee Year. The gesture marked the end of months in which “a stream of innumerable men and women, pilgrims of hope,” crossed the threshold of the basilica, journeying toward what the pope described as “the new Jerusalem, the city whose doors are always open.”

Bishop Ricken helped serve those in need at the New Community Shelter’s evening meal.

GREEN BAY, WI — Bishop David Ricken joined CEO Terri Refsguard from the New Community Shelter for a facilities tour and to help in serving the evening meal on Friday afternoon, December 19, 2025. Founded in 1994 to help the homeless and the hungry, the New Community Shelter has evolved into one of the most respected shelters in the city and state. In cooperation with others in our community, the shelter’s goal is to give every person access to the resources they need to overcome hardships, including education, counseling, and in-house services.

Bishop Ricken met with Terri Refsguard, chief executive officer (right), and Kris Olson, development director (left) to tour the New Community Shelter in Green Bay.

The home page of its website states, “The life circumstances that lead to homelessness are different for every individual, but every individual’s goal here remains the same: to achieve self-sufficiency through self-empowerment.”

Bishop Ricken said he is grateful to the staff of the shelter and all those serving in shelters throughout the 16 counties of the diocese for sharing their time and talents serving those in greatest need and upholding the dignity of every human person.
