
MANITOWOC, WI — Sr. Xaveria Wittmann, 92, a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity, died on June 14, 2025, at Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc.
Barbara Ann Wittmann was born on June 4, 1933, to Alois and Hedwig Wittman.
In 1948, at age 15, she entered the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity at Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc. She professed her final vows in 1958.
At the time she entered the community, Sr. Xaveria’s home parish was Holy Redeemer in Madison, Wis.
Sr. Xaveria earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Silver Lake College in Manitowoc and a Masters of Arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee.
She ministered as a teacher at various grade levels.
At the elementary level, she taught at St. Mary, Rhinelander; St. John, Antigo; St. Boniface, Manitowoc; and St. William, Waukesha, all in Wisconsin.
As a high school teacher, she taught at Xavier, Appleton; Holy Family Academy, Manitowoc; and Catholic Memorial (she was also a vice-principal), Waukesha, all in Wisconsin.
Outside of Wisconsin, Sr. Xaveria also taught high school at St. Benedict (Guernsey High), Cambridge, Ohio; Central Catholic High School (she was also principal), West Point, Neb.; and Yuma Catholic High School, Yuma, Ariz.
For several years, she was a member of the faculty at Holy Family College/Silver Lake College in Manitowoc. She also tutored students at Holy Family College, particularly those from other countries for whom English was a second language.
Sr. Xaveria also served at Holy Family Convent providing occupational therapy for those sisters needing it, assisted the director of education and carried out various other tasks as able.
Since 2009, she had been a member of St. Rita Health Center in Manitowoc.
Sr. Xaveria was preceded in death by her parents, Alois and Hedwig (Weiss) Wittmann; brothers (sister-in-law), Anthony Wittmann, Ralph (Kathryn) Wittmann; and sister, Irene Wittmann.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 18, by Fr. Gerald Prusakowski, OFM, at Holy Family Convent. Burial will follow at the Holy Family Convent Cemetery.
