MANITOWOC — Sr. Marie Gressel, a Franciscan Sister of Christian Charity who served many years in education, died Jan. 3 at Holy Family Convent in Manitowoc. She was 93.
Sr. Marie, whose home parish was St. Nicholas in Zanesville, Ohio, entered the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity in 1949. She professed final vows in 1956.
She graduated from Holy Family College in Manitowoc and later earned a master’s degree in mathematics from Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Sr. Marie ministered as a teacher at the following schools: St. Philip, Green Bay; St. Paul and Silver Lake College, Manitowoc; Xavier High School, Appleton; Catholic Memorial, Waukesha; Ironwood Catholic Central, Ironwood, Mich.; and Rosecrans, Zanesville, Ohio.
She also served as the directress for the temporary professed members of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity as well as ministered as a seamstress for the community. She was also a member of the Prayer Apostolate.
Sr. Marie was preceded in death by her parents: Herman and Helen (Adams) Gressel; brothers (sisters-in-law): George (Rosetta) Gressel, Herman Gressel and William (Shirley) Gressel; and sisters: Sr. Mary Rose Agnes Gressel and Sr. Mary Veronica Gressel.
She is survived by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral Mass was celebrated on Jan. 7 at Holy Family Convent. Franciscan Fr. Placid Stroik was the celebrant. Burial followed in the Holy Family Convent Cemetery.
